Back From Cozumel

Steph and I just got home from our vacation to Cozumel.  We went with a group from work.  This is our 2nd time there; our first was on our honeymoon back in 2003.  Click here to see our Honeymoon picture album.

During one of our excursions, our ATV 4 wheeler tour guide, told us that the place we honeymooned, Iberostar, was hit the hardest compared to all the other Cozumel resorts by hurrican Wilma in October of 2005.

This is a picture taken outside our honeymoon “suite”.  All the rooms at Iberostar are individual huts.  Take a look at the background of this picture.

Our guide said that because all their huts were built with those type of rooftops, it was easily damaged during the hurricane.  As a result; the entire place was decimated.  It was sad to hear that.  However, we actually got to see that resort again during this recent vacation to Cozumel.  Fortunately, they were able to rebuild everything.

This trip was so relaxing and a lot of fun.  Here’s a picture taken outside our balcony and another one with a couple of my friends, Justin and Mike, outside on Mike’s balcony.

While we were there, I had a chance to play some tennis with some of my friends from the office.  We did a little snorkeling, watched some sunsets, rode some 4 wheelers, and enjoyed some meals by the by the beach.

Another highlight of our trip was the opportunity to make some new friends, George and Martha (the middle couple) and spend some time with Joe and Merilee (the couple on the left); they did our premarital counseling.  It’s kind of neat how they spent so much time with us prior to our first visit to Cozumel and now we all get to vacation together in Cozumel.

We went on the 4 wheeler tour with Joe and Merilee.  Our tour guide took us through the middle of the jungles and we stopped off at this sink hole.  He told us wild stories of how the Mayans used to offer up human sacrifices at this hole.  People actually sacficed others; they killed innocent people to please the gods!

After the tour guide finished telling those stories, Joe made a comment that caught me off guard but was profound.  He said back to the tour guide, “You know, us 4 are a part of a religion that also takes part in a human sacrifice.”

I know where Joe was about to go with this, but I don’t know if the tour guide new.  The tour guide did not respond.  I wonder if he did not understand Joe and therefore did not respond, or if he heard him but was afraid to ask a question.  He might have chosen not to ask a question because our answer might have been, “That’s right, we sacrifice Cozumel tour guides.”

Of course, we were not going to say that.  Joe was right though.  The foundation of our belief is on the sacrifice and innocent blood shed of our Lord Jesus.  Who am I?  Who am I that Jesus Christ would lay his life down as a sacrifice, as a substitute for what I deserve?

This trip was so much fun.  We had a great time.  However, there is one thing that was missing…little Aidan.

Not a day went by where Steph and I did not miss him.  We anxiously waited for Steph’s mom’s email updates telling us every detail of their day.  Steph’s mom and grandmother babysat Aidan while we were gone.  We wanted to know what he ate, how long did he nap, did he take a bottle, where did they go, did he like carrots?

We wondered if Aidan even missed us.  We were gone for 5 days; did he even remember us?  All the books we’ve read tell us that 7 months old still do not have a good memory.  But, we are his parents!  Shouldn’t he remember us?

Steph’s mom told us that the first couple days, he seemed like he was looking around when she picked him up after naps.  It was almost as if he was saying, “Where’s my mommy and daddy?”  However, he soon adapted and we back to his playful self.  As long as someone was there to feed him, play with him, and hold him, we was content.

We showed up tonight and when Aidan laid eyes on us, he looked confused.  I was ready for arms to fly up and a huge smile.  It was kind of sad to see that he didn’t really remember us.  It took him some time to finally smile at us.

I can’t help but to think of how this is potential imagery for our relationship with our Heavenly Father.  How’s my memory?  How’s your memory?  Are we so intimately close to our Heavenly Father that we throw up our arms and smile each time we “see him” during our time in prayer and reading the Bible?  Or, do we seem somewhat distant?  Are we kind of lost?  Maybe God was close at some point in our lives, but He’s become a stranger lately.

It’s good to be back home now.  Steph is glad to finally get home and watch Grey’s Anatomy; what happened to Meredith?  Could she really have died?

I’m glad to be back in my own bed and have sweet little Aidan back home with us too.

Here are all the pics from our trip, enjoy.
